Goat Farming in India: A Growing Opportunity

According to the 19th Livestock Census, India is home to 135.17 million goats, owned by 33.01 million farming households. Goats account for 26.40% of the total livestock population in the country, making India the leading nation in goat population globally.

With increasing demand for goat meat, milk, and fiber, the goat farming sector is gaining momentum. Rising per capita income, growing health consciousness, and a shift toward nutritional food sources are driving this upward trend in consumption.

Traditionally known as “Bakri Palan”, goat rearing was once a subsistence activity for marginal farmers. However, today it is rapidly evolving into a commercial and profitable agribusiness. Entrepreneurs, progressive farmers, and agri-startups are showing keen interest in modern goat farming due to its low investment, high return potential, and quick reproductive cycle.

At Goatwala Farm, we aim to support this transformation by offering scientific training, pure-breed supply, consultancy, and a sustainable model to make goat farming a viable livelihood option, especially for small and marginal farmers across India.
